Facilities Vs Equipment
-
The Equipment view is used to maintain the implementation.
-
A facility is an abstract service provided by the product.
-
E.g. A SONET ADM provides a capability needed to build a customer's network.
The SONET ADM may be available from three vendors, and each vendor
may use a different number of circuit-packs (equipment) to implement the
same functionality/facility.
-
Physical vs Virtual Entities - The circuit pack object lifecycle is independent
of the presence of the physical circuit-pack hardware.
-
Cardinality relationships between Equipment/Facilities
-
One facility implemented by one circuit-pack (simple)
-
One facility implemented by many circuit-packs.
-
Many facilities implemented by one circuit-pack.
-
Circuit-pack implements parts of many facilities.
-
-
Object IDs
-
Equipment Objects are generally organized according to a hierarchical bus
structure (e.g. Bay-Shelf-Slot)
-
Facilities are not as clear-cut.
-
Relationships between circuit-packs may be fixed or customer configuration
dependent depending upon how they are connected.
-
Fixed relationships between circuit-packs are the result of a static physical
characteristics of the system. E.g. the circuit-pack in slot 3 is always
connected to the circiut-pack in slot 4 by electrical traces on the backplane.
This type of relationship is easy to represent in software as a plug-n-play
relationship.
-
Configuration dependent relationships depend upon some externally variable
physical characteristic of the system which may be modified by the user.
E.g. A circuit-pack in shelf 3 slot 2 of type A can be connected
to any circuit-pack of type B (regardless of its location) by a fiber optic
cable. In this case, the software must be configured by the customer to
create the relationship, or there must be some means of obtaining the identification
of the other end of the connection using the connection itself.
